Stop being busy

Is time we stop the glorification of "busy".

Thinking back, I was having dinner with a few of my friends, is Saturday evening and we are sitting in this "fancy" local eatery discussing random topics such as family health, world news, our hobbies and a recently lost GCU basketball game when the conversation begins to shift into our professional lifes. There is an accountant, a web designer, a free lance writer and myself, a business owner and consultant. - What have you been up to? Any new contracts? I asked- How was your year? Then everyone almost at once begins to respond stating how their year was busy, and it was great! The web designer then complaints about how he had so much work that he had no chance to spend a lot of time with his family or even go on a vacation, while the accountant wished he had a better year so he could even have that option - he worked so hard all year and couldn't even afford a weekend retreat.  The talk transitioned a bit into all of us kind of just bragging in one way or another how busy we were, and how busier we were hoping to get this coming year when I realized; that we glorify being busy. Does it give a meaning to our lives? rank us higher in a social status? How about less being busy and more being productive? I think that if we were to really time ourselves and give ourselves accountability we would get so much more done and then busy would turn into a word we hated rather than bragged about.

For 2 years now I have been carrying a timer in cell phone and for each task I need to complete, specially creative tasks, I turn it on and even if has no time limit it accelerates the process and helps me manage my time. Is little things like these that help me become more productive and be less busy. I rather brag about how much free time I have. - Last month I didn't do anything!
