Direct Labor Efficiency Variance

I know business is business and there are standardized ways of calculating and measuring your efficiency, profits, etc...

Today, I'll cover how to determine if your operations are efficient and how much they are costing you per production cycle.

Here is an introduction to Direct Labor Efficiency Variance:

Direct labor rate variance measures the productivity of labor time. No variance is more closely watched by management, since it is widely believed that increasing the productivity of direct labor time is vital to reducing costs. This variance is believed to closely reflect the productivity and its relation to overall costs of a company.
You can calculate the variance by multiplying actual worked hours by the standard rate of the particular company then subtract the result of the standard rate  x standard (expected) hours, so (ah x sr) – (sh – sr)

Let’s assume that I own a manufacturing company that produces simple product out of basic (raw) materials assembled in a line; we produce 6000 units of finished ship-ready units every 5,000 hours (my actual hours), the standard time to complete a unit is 2 hours and all the production line workers are paid $15.00 per hour.  We can calculate as follows:

 = (5,000 hrs x $15/hrly)  - ([6,000 units x 2 hrs sr] x $15.00)
= $75,000 – (12,000 Sh x $15)
= $75,000 – $180,000
= $105,000 favorable.

In this case the production capabilities or labor efficiency are favorable.
Good practices allow managers to promote favorable variances such as completing due diligence when forecasting and estimating budgets and system methods by analyzing trends that are non-related to employee caused situations. Being able to delegate properly what skill sets each employee has to better perform an assigned task which can have a domino effect of positive results if done right and obviously including in the budgeting and projections being able to stay on top of suppliers market conditions and relations because if their prices go up so will your costs to maintain that merchant, being able to foresee that can deter a huge headache due to revenue and market loss.

I hope it helps :)

Startup Creation

Entrepreneurs are the rocks stars of the economy, we make things happen and drive innovation for an ever evolving need.
We spot opportunities in any market and are able to do the most of any available resources to serve this need. Does this sound like you?

Yes? No? It doesn't matter. This is the kind of thing you don’t know until you are at the ripping the fruits of your successful venture or have many thanking you for your efforts.
No startup goes through the same efforts but most do go through the same process and usually have the same needs in various shapes and forms, but they do. You must first evaluate the idea, try to give it form then you evaluate the environment, internal and external, understand the opportunity and abilities along with your potential competition and their abilities. Acquire customer validation and feedback so you can re-shape your product to what they want, then is all about engaging investors, funding your production, marketing efforts and branding and then you must hire… This is easier said than done.
The reality is that Entrepreneurship is hard and you can’t learn it at business school, this is why being an Entrepreneur is a badge of honor. Startup creation is like raising a child; you need to have done it several times to really get the idea and emotions behind decision making and strategies down to where you are confident with yourself. What do you mean while? Take years to develop an idea? Or go through so many rejections until you finally get what the market truly needs?

No, a smart founder will seek out a team and resources available to develop the idea into a sustainable business model and stake the market. I am here to help you do that, whether is through mentoring efforts or project deliverable.

Why Employees are so Important

Random thought of the day... on employee retention.

Employee retention is key to success once you have them... Not marketing nor product quality. Employee satisfaction results in less time focusing on solving issues internally, better customer engagement, less overhead wasted, owner-employee mentality that drives employees to do what is necessary at a moment’s time rather than wait for leadership to direct which helps the Owner/CEO focus on bigger picture stuff… is all about employee retention.

The Happiness Advantage

I have a friend, extremely smart and experienced; she is an entrepreneur at heart. The reason I know this is because she has a good life and no monetary reasons for pursuing her current venture but she is pushing her knowledge and market understanding to start a business that can provide marginal profits at any margin of error. She is the founder of a social curation platform of therapy applicable Apps, and like most entrepreneurs she has her ups and downs. Grand Canyon University has recently joined a movement popularized by internet titan Google and later joined by many startups and built a custom complex for their employees that includes a gym, break rooms, yoga studio with lockers and showers, snack bars, Starbucks coffee, shuttles from parking lots to the main complex.  Departments have just merged and made this building their home but in their first day the negative comments began pouring, expectations were suddenly not met and the idea of being in this great new complex was suddenly not enough and made people unhappy.

GCU has spent millions in this facility to make its employees happy, yet they already failed in their first day. Common mistake? Do you expect for external world to affect your overall happiness? Increase productivity by having nice reception area? Or having a yoga studio in your office? You would think so, but our long term happiness comes from inside and how we are trained to engage with the external world. Grand Canyon University should focus in establishing a new company culture and “train” their employees by Unthinking, or undoing their expectations and establishing new positive ones so that they truly enjoy what they have; after all most employees there will most likely not ever get a chance to work at such a place again. On the other hand the absence of complains doesn’t equal happiness, it simply means compliance and possibly fear of retribution.
So what does my friend and Grand Canyon University have in common? Although they are pursuing greater good they are trying to accomplish it expecting external factors to define what success is for their particular efforts and long term happiness. This is from the perception that our external worlds are depictive of our happiness levels when in reality when those of us who have researched our psychological patterns and market evolution know about your external world I can only predict about 10% of our happiness and overall productivity. 90% of our long term happiness is determined by how we engage and interpret the external world, if we can change this then we can change the way we manage and lead and expectation based on thresholds of happiness levels in ourselves as employees and as individuals. Managers who understand this can have a higher ROI due to long term happiness in employees; Shawn Achor calls this the “happiness advantage”.  Approximately 75% of employment success and professional development is determined by overall happiness and social support not by levels of IQ and relevant experience. Is those who are hungry for success and take an opportunity as god sent that are happy to be challenged and happy to be able to prove themselves; is them who are the common ladder climbers, not the grad students who have been trained to follow instructions and act only when instructed or given any sort of directions. Yes, there are exceptions to this, but in reality a Master’s Degree in business doesn’t make a leader or corporate CEO, especially not in today’s mass production era of MBAs. Seth Godin calls this self-driven, entrepreneurial minded individuals; Linchpins. Books and education mean nothing without insight, and hunger for success drives knowledge and hard work but is happiness that allows us to actually reach that success threshold.

We need to Unthink the formula for happiness and success... I have discovered that the underlined formula for success has been that if you work harder you will be more successful and when you’re successful then you will be happy. This formula couldn’t be more wrong.  The reality of this is that we never get to this “success” threshold because we as society expect more, always expect more.  When we get good grades, being successful changes to now getting better grades, having a good job is not good enough anymore because now we are expected an even better job and keep the momentum going in your career so this success point never arrives and we never get happy, we as society have moved happiness past the cognitive horizon of success. What we need to again is Unthink everything we know as presume to be normal or in our nature. We must realize that expectations and “order” is nothing more than a recent
man-made creation naturalized by those leading our country decades ago, business owners and officials who enforced needs and standards to continue to provide for their market needs that have forged a set of fears in everything we do and how we perceive our economy, it shapes our culture and is gradually deteriorating our country while others lacking this “synthetic nature” are thriving and growing their power as nation catching up to us. We depend on those who break the rules and those “weirdoes” to drive their happiness and promote innovation and a healthier economy. You set the bar for yourself and don’t let external forces push against you so that you too can be successful in anything you because you are happy with what you have and know that what you have in an opportunity to do something not a reason that holds you back due to fear of losing it. Unthink and be Dangerous. What are you doing to promote the happiness advantage?

Unthink and be Great

a SWOT Analysis intro

This is a copy of my free downloadable document here.

""
SWOT is a tool for strategic analysis used by entrepreneurs and business in any market and of any size, they are used to analyze a company and the market (environment) in which it operates.
A SWOT analysis, depending on the type of business you are getting into, can be more effective in helping you understand your business model and your market than spending time writing a business plan is outdated as soon as you click save anyway.
Understanding: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, &  Threats.
The information is organized into internal and external factors:
1.     The internal look of a company’s operations and identifies what is being done well and what areas need improvement. It provides a foundation for further insight from the most obvious strengths and weaknesses. These are then used to dig further into what else is being done on a micro-management level whether good or bad, and so giving more leverage when is time for corrections and allows improvement from the ground up.
2.     An examination of the external factors affecting a company’s market stake. This again, provides a foundation for further digging based on the most obvious trends in operations by competing or parallel market companies that might be deterring growth for a company. This section identifies external threats and provides opportunities for the company to also understand its competitors.

Below is a standard SWOT analysis sheet for your use, it is encouraged to also complete one for yourself as the management and founders of any company are key factors to any success the idea or business will have. Understand where you fit in your own business model.

1.     Compare your skills against what your company’s SWOT revealed and identify the gaps, this can yield very helpful information and save you time and money in the long run.

2.     Don’t cheat and try to complement the first SWOT with your second, and you should always do the business SWOT analysis first, because is what will most true, your personal analysis should follow and only helps if is done with complete honesty.

What is Unthink and How Does it Work?

Unthink

We once believed that job provided with endless opportunities and resources, where the term “job security” was rarely questioned. Today that is a thing of the past, and in order to preserve our legacy for our future and for future generations we must change today by doing different things and creating opportunities for ourselves rather than continue sacrificing your energy for others who can and will most likely eventually easily replace you. Our life is filled with dangers, some of those dangers include not taking risks, this is the out most serious danger in our lives. By Unthinking you help pave a better future for yourself and those around  you.

What Is Unthink and How Does it Work?

Unthink is a term defining the undoing of knowledge and preconceived ideas from society as a whole.  All entrepreneurs and weirdoes are able to unthink and just do, they do what makes them happy and even if doing so singles them out. In fact, approximately 74% of those who unthink do so to stand out either for professional or personal development. Unthink Strategy is a program formulated to inspire you and guide you through self-discovery so that you can accomplish what you wish out of pure Unthinked Labor, which is the product of artistry and emotional labor.

Letter to a Friend

This is a letter to a friend, hoping to introduce him clearly to what the Unthink Strategy is in such a way that he can easily explain it to his friends and family and help him too :)

Josh, hope this helps.

So, Unthink is not about not thinking but instead is about freeing yourself from expectations and preconceived ideas of what is expected or what you think will happen by taking risks or just doing things out of the ordinary for you. I'll start with the elephant jn thenroom and the hardest part to understand and then trickle our way down. So, our culture has been built on giant scam... and although i feel Seth Godin describes this a slightly different way, we have been scammed into fearing things, we are afraid of losing our jobs, we encourage obedience, order and education as rules for success, and when someone questions this they get kicked or made fun of.. think of lily… she doesn't care who thinks what, she just sings because she likes it. she also makes good side money from it. she Unthinks.. she does because she wants. If she had stopped and thought of how old she is now, or wondering who would see her sing, or if they would even get gigs to sing at, or if people thought she wasn't good or looked funny or what not, she wouldn't be making good side money.. .and she wouldn't be a happy non caring person she is… she Unthinked w/o really knowing it.  She should be admired for that.

The scam I mentioned before was created by pure chance, but little by little we forged it into our families ideas and what we think is natural to us happens to be man-made and actually made very recently, a broken system and culture of blind obedience. Just a few decades ago our economy was just flourishing and more companies and factories opened and more stores opened and our focus as people changed to now wanting more leisure.. wanting more convenience, but we didn't want to spend all we had to get it either, because after all most were factory workers who earned very little. We wanted cheap appliances, we got them, we wanted free education, we enforced it, we wanted frozen meals, we got them; we wanted jobs we got them but the jobs we got weren't good. They were meant to create cheap labor done by disposable employees.. people who didn't cost you much every day but created 200 times the value of what it costs you to have them but in any moment you could still easily replace him or her.. .production lines were the way they did this.. this lowered their costs so didn't have to pay much for our convenience… so then they turned to the government and school system.. schools created more obedient workers because they don’t encourage disruption, or independent thinking.. is always following orders following the rules and fitting in.. if you don’t fit in you’re a failure.  Our system encourages new generations of followers and train on obedience…  We always hear, go to school, follow the rules, get a good job, stick it up, work your ass off and if you’re lucky you will be successful, if you’re lucky your employer will give you an opportunity. Hopefully you don’t lose your job and retire good. Then we started hearing failure is a good thing, if you’re failing it means you’re trying and you’re still in the game. All this is bullshit, is all fear that society has put in us, and forged that assumption that how we do things is meant to be that way, that we have a pre-determined future and that others have opportunities given them and so you weren’t that lucky so too bad ,just work your ass off until you die. We now know we have options to make us more happy and successful regardless of what our goals are.

But if we look into what’s going on, people are becoming successful not by following the rules but by standing out, being weird, not thinking and just doing and not following expectations that society has forged in us. They take risks instead of thinking their way out of an opportunity or worrying about what others might think of them if they fail.. or think they need business education to start a business or think they have to wait for the right moment,  a moment that will never come and is up to us to seize any moment and just do something not let it pass by worrying about what you are doing or whether it will work or not… people fail because they assume there’s a way of doing something and by those standards if the outcome doesn't match expectations is considered a failure but when you Unthink there are no failures and only adjustments to your efforts. Unthink Work is the product of emotional labor and artistry (that personal human touch).
Unthink helps anyone from a self-employed, to an employee who just wants to open opportunities for himself to a corporate CEO to someone just launching their weekend business. Unthink is about undoing what you think you know and re-discover your true potential by just doing something, anything.

This blog in itself is an example of it, it has my passion and personal touch (artistry) and it has emotional labor of writing and putting my emotions in this and is productive work because you read it, is an example of how just doing something pays off, if you are reading this it means the effort of just writing instead of thinking about it or waiting for later means it worked, I did and you read. I hope that you pass this on to others who think might benefit from just reading this… get their minds going and ideals pumped up to get shit done! Be disruptive, Unthink and do something.

Revolt! Do it now.

We have gone through several changes since founding our country and went from simply trying to survive to establashing ourselves to staking and ripping profits off markets, we have now passed the education and fail eras too where the ideas of going to school and getting a good job but also being encourage to also have the option of starting your own business and ok to fail fit in... we no longer need to fail, we no longer have to go to school and we no longer have to stick it out working for others.

Is time we revolt against the norm and what society wants us to believe and revolt against the system, but not in a violent way but through human  interaction and questioning, why do i have to do what you ask? Why should I follow the rules? Who created this rule and why? Can't I just not fill out this form and call you instead? Should I fire the employee or retrain for a more basic job where she will be indispensable? Question everything in a rational way. Is time we unthink.

Those successful have earned success not by following the rules but by questioning the process.
We live in the Unthink Era, where is more important to just do something than to think and analyze how to do it. Fail will come, but when you realize what Unthink is about, failure rate will decrease and each effort we put in will be a success, i decided to write this entry today, just write... with no agenda and you just read it. This entry was a success, is that simple.

Why Your Friends are Assholes

"Set yourself free by separating from those who hold you down."

So maybe you’re in a moment in life where you might want to do something great! You have a dream or idea, a passion that you want to make something out of and turn that hobby into a reality. Maybe you are just out of high school and want to move somewhere that allows you to freely or more accessibly accomplish your dreams. But you are afraid to lose your friends in the process or afraid you will disconnect from them forever.

My answer to that is so what?
If you are having this considerations it shows that you are mature enough to do what nature intended for us and that is conquer something, anything. Don't let the immaturity of others put your calling on hold or completely deter it.

Life is not about planning a great life and having a great life just because you have done what society and your friends have told you do but is how you react to things life brings you. Opportunities are not given every day but they are given and your opportunity right now is doing what your calling is asking of you and not over thinking or over analyzing or under estimating your calling but just doing.
Your friends are assholes if they want to hold you back for one more drink, one more party or maybe one more summer of fun. If your goal is to move away from your hometown or start a business right out of high school, go do it, you don't even need a business degree to do so, all you need is the will and ability to simply react to opportunities so you can build a business or move out of town.  I had to do this, I matured faster than my friends and some family members and the risk I took to follow my passions led me out of state and away from the parties and face time with friends that eventually led to me not having any friends to count on at home, not because they held grudges or because we are not friends anymore but because they took no risks, still haven't and so they remain dependent on others and only thinking about having fun. You too might have gone through this or are going through this right now and don't know how to react but trust me when I say that you will go far if you are strong enough to leave the security of social acceptance and go on alone to conquer your dreams. Set yourself free by separating from those who hold you down. People are selfish and in their immaturity will want you to put your life on hold.

The value of a friendship is easily found if those around you support you and do anything to help you and be with you, otherwise the so called friendship is nothing more than one sided and will only hold you back and distract you from what's truly important to you. Unthink what is expected of you as friend or what you expect friendship is supposed to be and do your own think, friendship will reveal itself in ways you never expected and your passions will lead you to truly engaging individuals that will connect with you and support you because of the same passion in life.

We don't choose our place of birth and our parents chose who our youth friends are by choosing the schools we go to, but is our mature selves that get to pick who we keep around and help build each other stronger.  Your friends are assholes if they are holding you back right this instant. #unthink & #dosomething

10 Tips for Public Speaking

I'm not going to tell you that public speaking is easy it really isn't but at the end of the day our worst fear from public speaking is assuming death from it. This is ridiculous, what can happen if we go out there and make fools of ourselves? we will make some people laugh if you can play it cool, break the ice, and learn from the experience right, so my overall tip for public speaking is this: Acknowledge to the group that you are nervous and to work with you, even encouraging interruptions in form of questions (at least the beginning until you get familiar with the emotion and learn to control it and your speaking improves)
Here are some proven tips on how to control your butterflies and give better presentations:
1. Know your material. This is important! Pick a topic you are interested in. Know more about it than you include in your speech. The more you know the less you depend on notes and can easily deliver facts as common sense to you which will make you seem more calm and deliver your message clearly. Use personal stories if possible and humor.
2. Practice. Practice. Practice! Little by little, one topic at a time over a period of time not the night before all at once.
3. Know the audience. Meet members as they arrive. Invite friends if possible too, as is easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers. Make the presentation a conversation.
4. Relax. Practice breathing exercises, don't get too worked out on these either, but just do simple in and out breathing techniques like they thought you in grade school..
5. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Again do this a few days in a row before time.   – it will boost your confidence.
6. Be patient with yourself, others want to hear you talk, not hear blurbs. The worst thing you can do is speed up your words because you are nervous and ruin everything so remind yourself that they are there to listen and you can take your time, even if on the clock because is best to cut a great presentation short that listeners can take something away from than wasting 5 minutes listening to blurbs from a scheduled 30 min presentation.
7. Don’t apologize for any nervousness or problem – we all understand is our human nature and most likely you felt it more than they did.
8. Concentrate on the message – Focus only on your message and not who your audience is and you think they expect... only deliver what you know.
9. Gain experience. Keep at it, practice! practice! practice!

10. Eat healthy. Specially the day and hours before the presentation, you don't want to ruin your presentation due to unfriendly stomach symptoms and besides eating healthy improves your mental condition, eat healthy.

Chidren & Your Business

I'm writing this particular topic while waiting for my son's turn to get his hair cut. We love coming to Cool Cuts for Kids, he gets to enjoy a movie, candy and sit in a cool car shaped chair while someone cuts his hair.
The waits are usually long, so here I am. Waiting here made me realize how even in a summer day packed with many errands waiting to get to prepare your business for the week to come, you can still make time to spend with your little ones, and or get as much use of the time while doing errands with them. The trick to this is not ignoring them either, so right now while we wait my wife and son play while I write this before I forget.
Lets not go into details on how to make time for your kids once ypu already have a business... the real challenge os when you are employed and still have to abby by. Is when you are limited with free time away from work and still have to spend time woth family and get things done around the house and trying to start a business that spending quality time is challenging...so lets talk about the most common excuse we give ourselves:
Starting a business is hard and extremely demanding, couple of reasons why most don't give it a shot, and being exhausted is something you must realize and accept it if you are seriously wanting to pursue your passions and starting a business out of them. The world is not going to stop for you so that all the little things exhausting you get easily done on your own pace. As entrepreneur, i have ran 2 years with only 4 hours of sleep and although we can have hours long conversation on the health effects of this reality, the fact is that starting a business requires sacrifices and being tired is one of them. Don't tKe what I'm saying as the only route though there are ways to manage your time better that will help you streamline your day and get more things done giving you more personal time which you can you use to rest or soend that same exhausting time with your children rather than working, you might still end tired but with a profound satisfaction of having spent time with your family and giving yourself a break from your responsabilities. We'll go into time management as you read on :)
What do you guys think? Any particular excuses you use yourself?

Start a Business in One Day

A lot of you keep on talking about wanting to start a business, or launch this great new product…
What are you waiting for?  What will change by tomorrow if you wait?
Unthink Now!
Below is what I hope a working checklist on getting yourself ready for business Keep in mind, I'm only talking about setting yourself up to do business:

1. Get your Employer Identification number (EIN). – online –
An EIN is like a social security number representing an entity as a federal tax number. Every business has its own EIN for government (IRS) tracking purposes.  Unless you are forming an LLC or plan on having employees you don’t need one by law in most states.
Still, get one, is cheap or free in some states if you go through the IRS site directly, by getting one you get to do everything under this EIN and not your personal information.
2. Get your business license. – online / person –
This varies from city to city, and some don’t require one but ask anyway. You can use your newly issued EIN to register and like most new business forms this one is easy to complete as well.
This forms requires basic forecasts of your business for the year… no big deal, just do your best when completing this forms.

3. Complete a Business/Personal Property tax form.  – person –
This is not always required but most cases should call for one. If you do start with business assets such as equipment or other large tag items that will be “owned” by the business you should be prepared to fill this info. Businesses are taxed on personal property, just like individuals.

Depending on the type of business you might need further permits such as a sellers permit (ask your local office)

4. Get a basic business bank account. – online / person –
You absolutely need this, if you are going to be running transactions off mobile card readers or conducting business constantly and especially if you have followed items 1 – 3 you need a bank account. Trust me, not having one can get tricky for you and the IRS. You need to keep everything related to the business separate from your personal finances, remember you ae two identities now when it comes to the IRS, your household gets reviewed separate from the business. Avoid getting in trouble and get one, besides this is easy and cheap often times only needing the EIN, a description of the type of business you are about to conduct and a minimal deposit fee (the same as personal accounts) but for now remember to not get suckered into a fancy bank account and only get the bare bones as in a savings account and business depository.
If you are having an online web store you no longer need to pay for processing fees or merchant accounts or machines for the code, use sites like Stripe.com for processing  your site’s shopping cart.

5. Set up an accounting spreadsheet.  – online / person –
Create a new spreadsheet or go to Entrepreneur.com and download basic financial tracking forms suitable for most startup or part time businesses, modify this to match your expenses and possible revenues and use this to keep track of things for now.
Don’t go on buying fancy software that you don’t know if you’ll need yet.. stick to what’s basic and cost effective.

6. Move on to making money.  – online / person –
Ok, now go agonize on the branding, the name and marketing efforts  (depending on your business)
Get a domain name once you have the name chosen.
Hint: For online stores is critical to have social media accounts to whatever name you pick cross check the web through this social accounts to see what name variations are most widely available so that your domain, name and social presence matches (as much as possible)
Go get set up wherever you need to be, or talk to landlords and merchants who will provide your inventory, find out about their credit lending (often available for large established companies) but you never know who works with who for what. ALWAYS ASK.

You’re now an entrepreneur, getting the ball rolling so just don’t let the momentum outpace you and keep at it.

Get Rich or Die Tryin'

Before anything CEOs have to be self driven and entrepreneurial. Even if you are an MBA at a large corporation with a large support system to help you do your job you need to be agile and a risk taker as the ideas and steps are taken by you the CEO.

I am a self made CEO. I started my first company when I was in high school and had sold my second company by the time I had reached my 20th birthday, but I'm not a genius or tech guru and made my money that way. I started not knowing anything except for that if I hustled enough I could eventually make something of myself. Hustle is something I learned from listening to rap music or the streets but over a years time while I lived and worked with an uncle in Florida who had first made his way to this country illegally and at the time owned already over 200 acres of land, his own farms and companies. My uncle was up before sunrise and worked almost to midnight every single day. My uncle hustled.

50 Cent, a famous rapper, has a movie I have particularly enjoyed a few times already. This movie is depiction of his rise from nothing to what he is now, a rap and business mogul. We get to learn the story of an inner city drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue his passion which is rap.

Get Rich or Die Tryin'

This is something all CEOs should strongly believe in as is what has gotten us to this point, that fierce determination of getting things done for the better of our bottom line, regardless of what that might be. In my case it was financial freedom so yes, getting rich or die trying.

Just like the character who learns to adjust to his environment and get to the streets to make a living you must be able to adjust to the market your company is staking, go out there meet potential clients, talk to them and get to know their needs. Learn what they are talking about and what they think their needs will be in the future.

Hustle, offer them something they need even if you don't have the physical product yet. When sales cover your costs, get it done and ship.
Always look for more opportunities, don't be afraid to challenge your company's limits to offer something you never done before, this is how you make your company better and get customers to realize that you truly are a hard worker and hustler to get your business in their business.

I like to think of myself not only as an entrepreneur because I have now earned that badge of honor, but I think of myself as a free agent. I hustle every single opportunity I come across whether I have done it before and often even before really knowing if I can deliver but is because of the responsibility of committing myself to these opportunities by offering myself to them that I get to challenge myself and learn new things and most of the time get them done and earn money, getting rich.

I am a super connector, I am rep agent, a CEO, an artist, consultant, marketer, PR consultant, copy writer, mentor, instructor. I'm a free agent. I'm a hustler.

Is because of this that I connect to movies and characters and music like is Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. Hopefully in the future we can connect and chat, but is during my hustle that I will continue to earn whether is holding a job while running two companies, splitting time for freelancing, consulting or simply collecting dues for representation.

Be Remarkable

Our jobs, again, are not to be down in the trenches doing labor or production work but to plan and execute ideas on how to make our businesses more successful and profitable as it continues to grow.

I'm not assuming only large company CEOs are being considered here, even if you are a small business owner you must wear many hats and each hat must independently work and do its best job regardless of what the other hats might think, and so when you are wearing the CEO hat you should only ideate and research what's needed to grow your company.

The most common approach to growing our companies is marketing, but you don't have a marketing or public relations study so what do you when you are in a budget? or have limited time? or resources?

Seth Godin, the author of many books and journal releases has a book titled  "Purple Cow". Although I think the book is just filler to sell you the title and subtitle, "Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable"

The idea is simple, be different to stand out.

The Problem is Not The Problem

...But your attitude about the problem. - Who said that??

-Captain Jack Sparrow

So much knowledge wrapped up in a drunken pirate but we need to appreciate what he meant. As business owners, entrepreneurs and CEOs we are meant to be leaders and leaders only. Our job is not to do any physical or production based work but to think and lead the way for others to follow us towards a greater healthier company. With leadership in mind, you must always stay calm; you see leadership attitude doesn't mean staying positive but it means staying calm.

The ability to stay calm or staying positive is what differentiates good CEOs between great ones.

If you stay calm you can think clearly and plan appropriately regardless of what the certain future is. Being positive can lead you to making the wrong desicions based on hope and might not always solve but dissolve.

Here is are my 3 steps to making calm decisions during uncertainty:

1. Stay away from peer pressure, clear away from the chaos and take a day to be away from the office so you can think clearly without tangling emotions or bad vibes from others.
2. Write down every single thought, making lists help you analyze your thoughts and make the best solutions logically not emotionally
3. Make a decision away from the chaos. Once you have come to a conclusion ensure yourself with optimizism as is the best you could and only go share your decision once is being made, so that second thoughts dont blurr your goal and logical thinking.

Stay calm my friends.

&

Happy Fourth of July.

Improving Your Public Speaking (Part 1)

I want to talk about something that is very common to business people, including many CEOs and that is public speaking. Nervous energy gets to us all in different ways, but we need to overcome that in any way to deliver a strong presentation and great first impression.
The main problem I see is that most people wait until the last days before a presentation then begin to practice their presentation or pitch or worst, work on slides and then wait until the night before and try memorizing the slides the night before is due.  The most obvious solution is practice.
1. When you practice, try to practice right away and don’t even wait for you to finish with the presentation you do this by practicing with each slide or point as you go, if you make changes is better because now you can deliver a same idea with different approaches and or seem more natural if questions do arise.
Practicing in segments really does help and is proven to be more effective than practicing entire presentations.
2. Make friends, get acquainted with the environment in which you are presenting or at least the hosts and or some of your guest listeners this will reduce the professional expectations a bit and will turn more into a business talk among friends.
3. Practice on visualization, people who can visualize the setting with those involved. Try to be very detailed with the image and picture yourself delivering a calm and clear message. This will help your game.
4. share the presentation with friends and get positive feedback and try to emphasize on the goodness of the message rather than what you think people will be thinking about you and your message.
5. Take deep breathes right before the presentation such as counting backwards from 10 with deep breathes between digits.

What is Lupus?

I want to take a moment, and introduce you to a very personal part of my life, a condition my wife has been dealing with for her adult life, Lupus?

I didn't know a thing like lupus existed and neither do most of us, please read and share, this could save your daughter, mother, sister or wife's life someday.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that damages random parts of a person's body, most commonly, women. The organs most commonly affected involve skin, joints, heart, brain, liver, blood, and your eyes. Lupus is most commonly found in women of color (Asian, African American and Hispanic) under 40. The symptoms are horrible and are often much much worse than what cancer patients report sometimes lasting months to even years between flares. Once diagnosed with lupus you must change your life completely to cope with the condition as it never goes away and depending on age, your chances of death can be very high because there is no cure and medical doctors still don't know what causes it or if it can be cure, so the effort is in controlling it.

Lupus changes your life as it attacks itself and your lifestyle and those around you. But we shouldn't let something as horrible and little known of as lupus get in the way of our dreams. You are reading this because I want to expose the realities of dealing with lupus and how it affects families and what we can do to help ourselves in chasing our dreams or helping others happy a fulfilling life while living with lupus.

Please follow, as I will continue to write and hopefully help everyone who reads.
Also, feel free to share your stories, I would love to have your story on Spotlight :)

I recently came across this blog entry that suggests several things for spending less time blogging, below is a copy of the original blog entry from http://thesocialmediamonthly.com/

Humberto Valle on Retaining Employees

The truth is that about 65% to 75% of adult age Gen Y will make up the small business owner capita in the country, that leaves about 25% of Gen Y who might want to but will never get to start their own businesses and will be working for someone else. Just because they might work for someone doesn't mean that they are not driven and entrepreneurial individuals and will do whatever they can to get ahead in the workplace without going on the ‘treppy road.
OppenUp is a social community based audition platform for freelancers and job searchers. OppenUp harnesses our basic need of wanting social acceptance, community engagement and support for our needs. The less psychological factors to our startup is that our generation is self-driven and has grown up with video, social media and picture sharing we have become more savvy in many real world situations including employable skills yet the way we find jobs has not changed in over 20 years.  So why do we keep going to job boards whose only interest is advertising jobs not getting you hired and creating accounts, sometimes paying, and applying for jobs we don’t know what company post them or where they are compared to you and or what  others think about it or even who else has applied? CEO’s and Hiring Managers, why do we stick to the old broken way of hiring?

Be Transparent

This doesn't mean have windows in every office, this means encourage employee ownership. The idea is that when you are transparent with your operations and business needs to grow your employees with become more like evangelist of your business entity and encourage its business and act like owners which reflects through increased productivity and faster growth.
This is especially important to realize when employing the Gen. Y who is not afraid to try things without actually being trained in them first, we are out to change the world and if we can’t at the moment we will try to help our employers and whoever gives us a chance. You as business owner or CEO need to encourage failure and employee ownership, this will have a great impact in your company, your sales and the company culture (will be covered later) let us take charge in projects or team efforts chances are we the opportunity will be taken seriously as is a dog eat dog world and if we are allowed to take the plate we will do our best to keep a momentum going, you will be simultaneously encouraging a company culture of success, self-discipline and pride that will help you retain employees longer.

Be more than flexible.

Be understanding of their needs and circumstances, I can’t tell you how many times as employee I would feel secure of my jobs and even though my boss was flexible with my schedule or personal needs every sense of job security was lost when talking about it. This issue can arise if you are ignorant on a topic, especially when dealing with inter racial employees or just in general. If an employee is affected by a family members health condition, being understanding is far better for the employee than the flexibility of letting them leave the workplace to take care of things at home because of the unknown… why are you so flexible with me? could you not care whether I’m here or not, so does that mean I’m very expandable? Which can then deteriorate the output of the employee as insecurity kicks in or because of it he begins to look for other opportunities and you just lost an otherwise great employee.
Provide Opportunities
This goes back to how this generation is changing expectations in the workplace, employees are more determined and entrepreneurial minded which means that if they are working for you, it is your responsibility to nurture that will and encourage them to grow professionally even if is something that can lead them away from your company, if you’re a smart CEO or owner you can even figure out how to utilize your employee’s learned skills. A close friend of mine owns a cleaning company, he employs a small troop of commercial cleaners who are offered tuition help after a year of employment so that they can learn basic business through community so that then he can teach them how to start their own cleaning companies if they want to or help manage his better, so far the turnout for him and employees has been great.

Money is money regardless of how you earn it and so employees love the idea of getting their own cleaning companies even if a starting point only, better than waiting a year for a 2% pay increase right? keeps them motivated and you make business partners & friends in the process not ruthless competitors.

Encourage a Bit of Down Time

The average employee will spend the majority of their lifetime earning a paycheck, the least you can do is try to make the environment easy going and more engaging for them. By encouraging down time your employees get to talk to each other and get to know each other more which can lead to more efficient project management, coordination and output at the same time you make it a place of business for them not a place of work which changes the entire moral of an employee because now they get to enjoy their time as they conduct their business (earn their pay). This is domino effect that can take an entire book dedicated to this but this increases loyalty, once you have your employee’s loyalty you can be unstoppable in the market.
